Hey Ram!! These words resonate in every Indian's heart as they were the last words by the father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhiji. Fondly called Bapu, he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on this day in the year 1948. On the 23rd of March 1931, three of our greatest patriots were martyred by the British Colonial Government. Bhagath Singh, Shivram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar were hanged for their revolutionary ideals.
30th January is dedicated to all these great people who were martyred and is called Martyrs Day or Shaheed Diwas. Our President, Prime Minister, Vice President and other notable dignitaries visit Raj Ghat Memorial and place wreaths. Armed Forces play the Last Post, and a two minute silence is observed by the entire nation. Let us uphold the principles of non-violence and lead our great nation.
